Interesting People
So many interesting people came into the library.
- There was the man who used 3 different names and acted different with each one.
- Mary C. was very demanding and would say she paid her taxes, so we worked for her. Yet she lived in Chubbuck, and her taxes had nothing to do with our library.
- Anna rarely spoke, but always brought Christmas cookies and then shocked me by asking me to write her a letter of recommendation when she wanted to move into a certain apartment.
- Vern was a sweet older guy who made a yearly trip to Nashville and often went backstage to meet some of his favorite stars.
- There was the young man, Willard, with Asperger's Syndrome who could hear my hair and would ask me to make it be quiet. He asked me for my picture. I gave him a bookmark with my photo on it.
- Richard was very quiet and was waiting at the door nearly every morning when we opened so he could use the Internet.
- One man was too talkative. We had to move the furniture so he didn't stop us in high traffic areas. He would tell us way too much, sometimes yelling across the room repeatedly until we answered him. I'm going to lunch now. Here's the pencil I borrowed. I'll be back. I'm going out to my car.
- Innumerable parents with very young children who expected them to sit quietly for hours while they used the Internet and would get mad when they didn't.
- People who refused to pay for printing before we had the pre-pay system installed.
- Troy who kept asking me out, even though he knew I was happily married. Then one day he asked me how you have a happy relationship (he had 2 girlfriends). I told him the first thing is you never, never, never, ever, never, never, ever even think about cheating.
- Joel, who tried to make changes to the first public personal computer the library had. It needed repairs after that. He was a patron for many years, frequently causing problems. His manner of speaking offended many.
- Carlos who began coming to the library when he was about 9 years old to check out books on the occult. He came in frequently and became friendly with Gaila and me. We worried about him. As an adult he came in to thank us and let us know he eventually became a finish carpenter and has his own company and makes very good money.
- Charley who was mentally challenged yet good with computers. He would gladly help others with their minor needs, but was eventually banned for continually accessing inappropriate sites.
- Roy who was an alcoholic who sobered up for six months, but relapsed when the City denied him a cab driver's license. We had to have police officers remove him from the library that night. They had to put him in a wheelchair, he couldn't walk and they could barely keep him in the chair. He sort of kept melting out of it. It was really sad.
- The guy who always called me 'doll'.
- The couple who came in almost daily and stole the toilet paper out of the rest rooms.
- Carta Sierra who used to perform with Roger.
