Onions

I saw something today on Facebook about the healing power of onions (http://www.hefty.co/onion-in-sock/). It reminded me of a story my Dad told me. Any time I record these stories it is important to remember they are my memories. I didn't always record them at the time they happened, so they are as accurate as I can make them.

Anyway, Dad (Ralph LaVar Sharp) told me that as a child his kidneys quit working. I don't know what was wrong with them. I want to say he was about ten years old, but I'm not sure. The doctor told his parents that there was nothing that could be done and that Dad was going to die. Dad's Grandfather Sharp (Charles Phillip) lived across the street and he came to the house. Charles put raw sliced onions all over Dad's body while Geneva (Dad's mother) boiled water. Charles had Geneva put towels in the boiling water and then he put those wet towels over the onions.

Dad said the pain was awful because it was so hot. They tucked him in the bed and had him 'sweat it out' all night. The home cure worked and his kidneys started doing their job.

Some of the old home remedies that have been forgotten maybe need to be revisited. I know they used to use leeches for medical purposes.

Roger's brother, Micki, accidentally cut his thumb off with a lawnmower. After it was reattached, special leeches were put on the end of it to help to pull the blood flow through to the tip. It was yucky to look at, but it did the job.
