Flying
As a young person I wanted to fly an airplane. I didn't want to be an airline pilot, that seemed like a huge responsibility, but flying a small plane was a very attractive idea. Of course, things like money and an opportunity for lessons were issues.
During my third year at BYU I got a phone call from my friend Bill Russel who lived in Canada. He wanted to set me up for a blind date with a friend of his. I said OK and it was arranged that his friend and I (I don't remember his name, so I'll just call him John) would meet one night to study. That went pretty well and I learned that John was a licensed pilot. There was a small airport near Provo and it was decided that if we had four of us willing to pitch in for the rental fee, John would take us flying.
My roommate Irene found someone to come, so with John and I that made four and we had enough for our flight. The plane only held 4 people, it had propellers but I don't remember if it had one or two. Once we were up in the air and out over the point of the mountain near the State Penitentiary, John gave me some instructions and let me take over. I flew out to Midvale and showed everyone where my parents lived.
What a thrill! I'm sure it was illegal, but I'd probably do it again if I had the chance. It was a great experience.
