Rocky

For a few weeks during the second year I was at BYU, we had a roommate named Barbara Rocky. She was from California and one of the roommates, Jan, knew her from high school. Rocky (as we called her) seemed to have some emotional problems. She called her mother at least once a day and talked for a long time. In those days you paid by the minute and it was very expensive. We lived on the third floor of the dorm and one day I found her sitting on the wall of the balcony with her feet dangling over the edge. The roommates were very concerned about her well-being and a couple of us went to the couple who were in charge of the dorm and told them what was going on. Shortly after that, Rocky moved home.

The next year Rocky lived in our branch, but not our apartments so we didn't have much contact with her. Then one day Dennis told me they had been instructed not to let her have the sacrament because she was involved in devil worship or maybe it was witchcraft; I don't remember which. Very soon after that we heard she had been murdered. Until they found the killer I felt her death had been related to her association with the occult. Five years doesn't seem much of a sentence for murder.
