Recycled Greeting Cards

Gaila, who worked with me at the library, enjoyed cutting out pictures from greeting cards. At some point, we started thinking of ways to use those cutouts, and also how to do other things with cards. We had lots of fun doing this. We used them for a couple of displays at the library and I remember at least one class that we gave at my ward Relief Society. There was a very popular stationary/card company (Current) that many people bought things from, through their catalog. We decided we wanted to create a small booklet with our designs, including instructions which I was writing, and photos that Roger was taking. After we had a few items ready, we sent our idea to Current. I've included copies of their responses. We never tried submitting our ideas anywhere else, but I keep some of creations just in case...

As a supervisor at the library it was my responsibility to enforce library policies and sometimes that was very challenging. Twain Thomas was a patron who had repeatedly refused to obey the policies and procedures for using the Internet computers and had finally been banned from using them forever. After a year or so he came in and tried to use them again. I was afraid to talk to him because he had quite a temper, so I asked my supervisor to stand near by while I talked with him. He did get upset, but ultimately left and we breathed and big sigh of relief. Not too long after that the following appeared on the news and we were even more grateful that he had left the library with just some arguing and grumbling. He could have attacked me. Quite a surprise!

In December of 2013 my former roommate, Irene, published a book.  I had not heard from her for several years, but we found each other on Facebook and she told me she was an author. I found her book on amazon.com and ordered it for the library. She had become a life coach and the book deals with some of her views and thoughts. Imagine my surprise when I found I was the subject of the first paragraph of the book!!!!! I do want to say I believe I was saying that bit each morning as a class assignment. Somehow people think that librarians read for work. They say things like, "I wish I had a job where I could just read." I would answer, "So do I." Of course, it was expected that as employees we would readers and be ready to refer people to titles.
