No witness

For a couple of years I worked as an aide in a nursing home in Salt Lake City. It was a lower class kind of place, but the people were not treated badly. It just didn't have anything fancy. The majority of them were ambulatory but knew they would never be leaving to go home. We had one exception and I never could understand why he was there with all those old people. He was a young man who had just been released from prison and we were sort of his halfway house. I don't know what his crime was and we were not given any special training concerning him.

In those days you could smoke indoors. Even the nurses smoked. Residents could only have cigarettes at certain times and they had to come to the nurses station to get them, they were not allowed to keep them with their personal items. Well, this guy wanted his cigarettes early one day and I reminded him he would have to wait. He argued with me, but I was firm. All of a sudden, he hit me with his fist in my left eye, HARD. There was a nurse in the room, but she did not see him hit me. So I had no witness. It was my word against his. Well, I had never bruised very easily, and of course I did not get one this time. I was so..... disappointed, I wanted the proof.

I don't remember any other interactions with the man. Also don't remember if he was given any disciplinary action.

As a supervisor at the library it was my responsibility to enforce library policies and sometimes that was very challenging. Twain Thomas was a patron who had repeatedly refused to obey the policies and procedures for using the Internet computers and had finally been banned from using them forever. After a year or so he came in and tried to use them again. I was afraid to talk to him because he had quite a temper, so I asked my supervisor to stand near by while I talked with him. He did get upset, but ultimately left and we breathed and big sigh of relief. Not too long after that the following appeared on the news and we were even more grateful that he had left the library with just some arguing and grumbling. He could have attacked me. Quite a surprise!

In December of 2013 my former roommate, Irene, published a book.  I had not heard from her for several years, but we found each other on Facebook and she told me she was an author. I found her book on amazon.com and ordered it for the library. She had become a life coach and the book deals with some of her views and thoughts. Imagine my surprise when I found I was the subject of the first paragraph of the book!!!!! I do want to say I believe I was saying that bit each morning as a class assignment. Somehow people think that librarians read for work. They say things like, "I wish I had a job where I could just read." I would answer, "So do I." Of course, it was expected that as employees we would readers and be ready to refer people to titles.
