Jesse James aka William Cole

Today the following email went out to librarians all over Idaho and of course, it brought to mind a bit of a story.

Hello all,
Our local author, Randy Willie, who wrote “Heavy Metal” is willing to do author nights up through the Boise and Idaho Falls areas and any place in between.  Randy has interwoven our local legend of the “Iron Door” and Jesse James into his book. If you would like to have him at your library the contact info is as follows:  loiswillie@atcnet.net, phone 208-766-2451.  We are hosting a night with him on Aril 10th at 7:00 pm.  If any of the surrounding libraries close to us would like to join in, drop me an email.
Randy’s book is available on amazon.com
Thanks

I don't have any facts at my fingertips, but years ago, Susan (Gardner, I believe), a Jones relative was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria. I saw a letter written by a friend of hers that said it was her job to pick up the queen's handkerchief should she drop it. I've done a little looking on the Internet and in a digital copy of part of the queens diary and couldn't find any mention of her, but anyway, she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and moved to Malad. I have been in the cabin where she lived with her children and it was smaller than the office I have at the library. It must have been very difficult after living at court. I believe her first husband died. Along came William Cole, who she married. They were not married too long, when he left a poem for her on the table about Malad and the grasshoppers and never returned. William Cole was a known alias used by Jesse James.

The City of Malad has now moved the cabin from family property and plans to turn it into a tourist attraction, the last I heard. Aunt Kathryn Cannon has done extensive research and has found no evidence to support either the Jesse James story or the one about living at court, but it makes for fun stories.
